I got up early this morning to a house full of health-conscious female teens all scurrying around getting ready early for SAT and ACT prep classes and an a cappella rehearsal and gig. Quickly, I whipped up a nutritious, great-tasting breakfast smoothie. It was delicious!
Directions
- Add all ingredients to the blender, adding the milk first.
- Blend until smooth.
- If extra sweetness is desired, add 1/2 teaspoon of honey.
℞ M.D. Notes
- This smoothie is beneficial for anyone experiencing a sore mouth or throat.
- Oatmeal has many health benefits, including a high fiber content. It is a rich source of magnesium, a good source of selenium, and contains an antioxidant compound unique to oats called avenanthramides.
- Berries have an abundance of antioxidants, neutralizing free radicals. It is thought that free radicals may play a contributory role in many disease processes. Berries are also a good source of fiber.
- Bananas are a good source of fiber, potassium, vitamin C and vitamin B6.
- A UK Women's Cohort Study with over 35,000 participants found that eating a diet rich in fiber from whole grains, such as oats, and fruit offered significant protection against breast cancer for pre-menopausal women. (Cade JE, Burley VJ, et al., International Journal of Epidemiology, 2007.)
